In a press statement dated 9th march 2020, signed by the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, says, “this removal is made after due consultation with the relevant stakeholders and in compliance with part 3 section 13 of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and other reasons stated above.” Furthermore, the statement insists that “The removal was reched to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over a thousand years.
In May 1994, the military ruler General Sani Abacha deposed Awwal Ibrahim, Sarkin Suleja, although he was subsequently reinstated in January 2000.
The Governor of Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje called for calm among the public stating that, “a new Emir will be soon appointed.”
A few hours later, after presiding over an emergency Executive Council Meeting, a new Emir was announced.
Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Bichi and the son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, emerges as the new Kano Emir after the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II. This was officially announced in the presence of the Kano Emirate kingmaker and other stakeholders at Ante Chamber, Government House, Kano.
